His Highness Prince Nikolai of Denmark is celebrating his 18th birthday on 28th August 2017.

Nikolai is the eldest child of Prince Joachim of Denmark and his first wife, Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg. He is also the eldest grandchild of Her Majesty Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik of Denmark. His Highness has three younger siblings: Prince Felix (b. 2002), Prince Henrik (b. 2009) and Princess Athena (b. 2012).

In celebration of Prince Nikolai’s 18th birthday, the Royal Danish House has released new images of the Prince taken by Steen Brogaard.

Queen Margrethe will host a birthday dinner for her grandson this evening at 19:00 on the royal yacht Dannebrog which is docked at Amaliehaven. The Danish Royal Family will all be in attendance, as well as the Countess of Frederiksborg.

The Prince recently got his driver’s licence after several months of study. Up until now, he had to have someone over the age of 30 in the car with him while driving. Now that he has turned 18, he can drive alone in a car without the restriction of supervision.

Back in March, Prince Joachim spoke to Danish magazine Billed Bladet about his son coming of age saying, “It is amazing that time can go so fast.” About his eldest child’s future plans, Joachim said, “He should not be forced into something. Nikolai’s future shall be conducted entirely by his own plan.”

Nikolai William Alexander Frederik, currently seventh in line to the Danish throne, was born on 28 August 1999 at the Copenhagen University Hospital (Rigshospitalet) in Copenhagen. The Prince was christened on 6 November of the same year in the chapel of the Fredensborg Palace with his paternal uncle, Crown Prince Frederik; maternal aunt, Nicola Baird; Peter Steenstrup; Prince Edward, the Earl of Essex; and Camilla Flint serving as godparents. He was confirmed on 18 May 2013 in Fredensborg Palace Church.
