Alas, it wasn’t meant to be between Maurie Sherman and the Prince, who has been dating actress and humanitarian Meghan Markle for a year.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made their first official public appearance on Monday at the Invictus Games, where they watched a wheelchair tennis match together.
Prince Harry was visiting the CN Tower in downtown Toronto for an Invictus Games Foundation reception, and greeting the crowds – some of whom had been waiting four hours to catch a glimpse of him – when the radio host beckoned him over.
“I love you so much,” said Maurie once Prince Harry came over. “I would leave my husband for you!”
Prince Harry appeared to be surprised by the statement, replying “Sorry?”
The Prince tried to change the subject to travel, but Sherman kept complimenting him.
“You’re gorgeous, you’re gorgeous.”
Inside the reception, Prince Harry gave a speech, saying “It is unbelievable to see the journey that everyone has been through and I cannot stress this enough to everybody to get out there, meet these guys, listen to their stories and in some cases, learn from them.”
Meghan did not accompany Prince Harry to the reception, but has been spotted at various Invictus Games events. She attended the opening ceremony on Saturday night but did not sit with Prince Harry, and also visited the cycling training tent while he met with competitors.
Prince Harry told a competitor today that Meghan was loving the Games.
A royal engagement is expected soon, with some royal watchers speculating that the couple is already engaged but waiting for the Invictus Games to end before it’s announced so as not to take away attention.
Prince William laughed on Monday morning when he visited William Cowley Parchment Makers, when the general manager said that Prince Harry’s marriage certificate would be made using the company’s vellum (as it is used in all royal documents and Parliament documents), but didn’t comment further.
