Prince Charles will visit the Westmorland Country Show for the first time, it has been announced.

The royal tour around one of the oldest shows in the UK will take place on Thursday, 14 September, the Westmorland County Agricultural Society has said.

During the visit, the Prince of Wales will be offered an insight into Cumbria’s finest examples of farming, food and industry.

Chief Executive of Westmorland County Agricultural Society, Christine Knipe, said, "We are absolutely delighted that His Royal Highness will be attending the show this year and we are sure he will enjoy his day with us.

"During this visit, we invited His Royal Highness to return one day, so the fact that he will be with us again to experience the Show fills the Society with great pride. Westmorland Show is a true celebration of Cumbria, and as such, we are looking forward to showcasing the best of the region’s farming, food and livestock".

The one-day event this year includes a variety of shows, including for agricultural machinery, handmade gifts and crafts, motors, livestock equipment, country clothing, garden furniture and designer kitchens, among many others. Up to 400 trade stands will be installed to accommodate participants in the exhibition.

A range of competitive classes for heavy and light horses, beef and dairy cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, alpacas and dogs will also take place.

Although this will be the first visit to the show, His Royal Highness toured the Society in April 2015, during which he visited a range of educational activities and met officials and volunteers.

Days after the visit, he donated £10,000 to set up a community support fund in the county. The Prince’s Countryside Fund also supports the farming and tourism sectors in Cumbria.
