Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia |
Proud grandfather King Carl XVI Gustaf announced that the second child of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia would be named Gabriel Carl Walther and hold the Duchy of Darlana. His full title is Prince Gabriel Carl Walther of Sweden, Duke of Darlana. He announced this at a cabinet meeting this morning alongside Crown Princess Victoria.
The Prince's names come from his paternal grandfather, the King and paternal great-grandfather, Walther (the father of Queen Silvia). Darlana is the area where Princess Sofia grew up.
A Te Deum service will be held at 12:15 this afternoon at the Royal Chapel in Stockholm Palace with the King, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip, Princess Madeleine, Christopher O'Neill, and members of the Hellqvist family in attendance.
The Swedish Royal Court released the first photo of their newest member on 1 September on their official website and social media accounts. The image shows the little royal in his car seat with his parents, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia outside their home of Villa Solbacken.
His birth was announced in a press release from the Royal Court saying, "The Office of The Marshal of the Realm is delighted to announce that HRH Princess Sofia gave birth to a healthy child Thursday the 31 August 2017 at 11.24 am at Danderyd Hospital.
"Both mother and child are in good health".
Carl Philip and Sofia already have a one-year-old son, Prince Alexander who was born last April. The couple married on 13 June 2015 in the Royal Chapel of Stockholm Palace.
Official images of the happy family are expected sometime in the next week.
The christening will likely be in around three months. Princess Madeleine, the younger sister of Carl Philip and Sara Hellqvist, the younger sister of Sofia, are expected to be two of the godparents.
Prince will be joined by a younger cousin next March when Princess Madeleine gives birth to her and husband Chris O'Neill's third child.
