The King was awarded for “the visionary leadership of the Sovereign in promoting harmony between different cultures both in Morocco and on the international scene.”
Prince Moulay Rachid, the King’s brother and second in line to the Moroccan throne, accepted the award on behalf of the King, at a ceremony at the New York Public Library. The ceremony was hosted by Irina Bokova, the Director-General of UNSECO and the Leadership Council of the Global Hope Coalition.
“Two months ago, I was invited by His Majesty the King to visit Fes, a magic city with its Medina, which is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List,” Bokova said.
“With His Majesty the King, we walked through the narrow streets of the Medina and saw the fervour, love and enthusiasm of the Moroccan people towards the Sovereign, especially when we visited the Medersas. It was indeed a moment of communion and respect for the Muslim religion.”
Bovoka noted that the way King Mohammed approaches tolerance is a “response to extremism and radical ideas by consolidating the values of mutual respect and openness.”
The Global Hope Coalition is made up of three non-profit organisations based in New York, Zurich, and Hong Kong, and works to combat violent extremism, calling it “one of the gravest dangers of our time.”
“But around the globe, a new force is rising: men and women who are taking great risks to oppose these extremists – wherever they spread lies, bigotry and hatred.”
The Coalition calls itself a “global platform to empower courageous individuals who stand up to terror and violence, preserve our cultural heritage and build bridges across cultures.”
Also recognised at the ceremony were the Presidents of Iraq and Mali, and former First Lady Laura Bush.
