Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan presented awards to the winners of the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Solve Challenge Finals on Sunday in New York. She is currently on a working visit to to the United States alongside His Majesty King Abdullah and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Hussein.
The Queen is the co-chair of the ‘Youth, Skills, and the Workforce of the Future’ challenge, and as a result, she was there to hand out the awards alongside Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop and Atlassian Head of Foundation Mark Reading.
This challenge had participants focus on the fourth United Nations Sustainable Development Goal which works to develop “solutions to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education.”
The innovators created different solutions that would assist young people who are disadvantaged in acquiring the 21st-century skills to enter the workforce. These young people have to be under the age of 24 and from low socio-economic backgrounds.
Close to 300 people were in attendance when Her Majesty presented the awards which had “called on innovators to develop lasting solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges facing learning, health, sustainability, and economic prosperity,” according to the press release sent out by the Office of Her Majesty.
Solve was initiated by the Boston based MIT to bring together technologists, social entrepreneurs, business leaders, policymakers, researchers, and others. They work to “unearth and implement solutions to specific, actionable challenges.”
Her Majesty also met briefly with MIT President L. Rafael Reif before the awards ceremony. He has been the President of MIT since 2012.
The working visit of Their Majesties and His Royal Highness primarily revolve around the United Nations and the General Assembly.
