The 70-year-old royal climbed into the fire engine's driving seat during a visit to Emergency One in East Ayrshire, which makes and provides firefighting equipment for fire and rescue services in the UK.

Camilla joked "I feel like Fireman Sam" as an employee of the firm gave a demonstration on how to work all of the buttons and controls.

Emergency Once employs 180 full-time employees in Scotland and is one of the largest employers in the area.

The company also employs 30 apprentices who are based in a variety of disciplines.

Charles and Camilla, or the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay as they are known in Scotland, are currently undertaking a three-day tour of the country.

Later today, they will attend a garden party and dog show at Dumfries House as part of the Stately Home's tenth-anniversary celebrations.

A decade ago, Prince Charles helped secure a £45 million deal to buy the house, saving it from going up for sale and securing Dumfries House's future.

Also on Thursday, the Duke and Duchess will visit Netherhird Community Garden in Cumnock, meeting volunteers and local schoolchildren.

The garden was developed as a community space, tackling the negative connotations that surround the area and its links to anti-social behaviour.

Yesterday, Charles and Camilla attended a reception to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Classic FM. Among the other guests in attendance was the President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins, and singer Myleene Klass.
