Her Majesty Queen Letizia of Spain attended an event on Friday organised by the AsociaciĆ³n EspaƱola Contra el Cancer (AECC) for World Cancer Research Day in Madrid at the National Prado Museum.

The Queen closed out the event that began with a roundtable discussion with a speech and handed out the AECC 2017 Cancer Research Grants. She then held a meeting with AECC collaborating companies after the ceremony had concluded.

The roundtable, called “The Importance of Cancer Research on a Global Scale,” was attended by members of the Steering Committee on World Cancer Research Day. Casa Real said that this discussion “gave voice to the primary funders of the AECC grants that counted their role in the achievement of these funds and to the patient as final recipient of the AECC research effort.”

At the conclusion of the roundtable, Her Majesty presented a statuette-flask to Violeta Serra, a researcher who partook in the discussion at the Prado Museum.

During her ending speech, the Queen “dedicated her message of ‘unity, joint work, collaboration and integration’ to oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, nurses, psychologists and all medical and surgical specialists who apply the results of the investigations,” explained Casa Real.

Queen Letizia also stressed the importance to patients of both scientific research and medical care.

Her Majesty attended the event alongside Secretary of State for Research, Carmen Vela.

Queen Letizia is the Permanent Chair of Honour of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) and the Scientific Foundation of the AECC.

Each year the AECC delivers the Aids to Cancer Research. This year the event will have renowned Spanish scientists, Dr Juan Carlos IzpisĆŗa and Dr Josep Tabernero, in attendance.
