Prince Andrew confirms presence of Royal Family at 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia

Much preparation is needed to put on a tremendous event like the Commonwealth Games. Royal Central has written several posts on the ceremonial significance of The Queen’s participation in launching the pre-games. Her Majesty is not the only one who plays a role in launching these games. While in Australia, Prince Andrew revealed to one very lucky volunteer that several members of the Royal Family would travel to Australia for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Earlier this year, Her Majesty The Queen wrote a letter to the participating countries of the games and their athletes. This message is kept safe in a baton which will travel the world until it reaches the Gold Coast of Australia – the location of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Looked after by a royal protection detail and his own entourage, His Royal Highness Prince Andrew spent the past few days on the Gold Coast judging entrepreneurs and mingling with Commonwealth volunteers.

He told one GOLDOC employee a “number of very important people” would be visiting the Gold Coast for next year’s games.

On Saturday, His Royal Highness met 25-year-old Taleah Kneebone at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre at Carrara. Along with greeting VIP guests, Kneebone will volunteer at the village for the Australian Commonwealth Games next year.

Kneebone said of her moment meeting Prince Andrew: “He was so human, I can’t stop smiling every time I think about it, it was actually one of the highlights of my life.

“He told us that when royals go to the games, it’s the volunteers who are the ‘cream on top’ that really make or break the event.

“He said we’ll have some very important people coming through next year and that we will be greeting some members of his family at the Commonwealth Games.”
